{Round} Hoagie Buns

I have dinner plans with these guys. I’d even call it a date.

Rumor has it these are good at holding beef. At least that’s what Betty from Colorado says on the Taste of Home website. Betty just wanted a delicious and convenient way to hold her beef and here it is.

You may be yelling at your computer screen right now. You’re probably saying something like. “Megan! Those hoagie buns are supposed to be ovals or something!” And let me tell you, I know it. I tried to make them oval-ish like the mini sub buns Betty intended, but they just ended up round little dudes. Next time I know that I have to exaggerate my oval effort.

After taking a bite of one of these buns, warm from the oven, I stopped caring that they aren’t ovals. I decided to embrace them for the sandwich buns that they are. They’re just trying to be themselves; individuals and unique and all that crap.

These are super tasty and strong enough to hold together the dinner sandwich of my dreams. And really, that’s all I wanted from these guys.

{Round} Hoagie Buns
Recipe from Taste of Home

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 3 cups warm water, divided
  • 2 T sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 T salt
  • 8 to 8 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Add 1 tablespoon sugar and let sit for 5 minutes. Add the remaining warm water and sugar. Beat in oil, salt and 4 cups flour until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside to rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.
  3. Punch dough down and turn onto a floured surface; divide into 18 pieces (about 3-ish ounces each). Shape each into an oval and place 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. With scissors, cut a 1/4 inch deep slash across the top of each. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile preheat the oven to 400°F.
  4. Bake for 11-14 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
