Meatball Sliders

Remember how I made those silly hoagie buns? Well, they wanted to hold provolone and meatballs when they grew up. And it happened!

This is that dinner date I told you about. You know, the date with some hoagie buns?

As soon as I saw this recipe on The Pioneer Woman’s blog, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. And it sure didn’t disappoint.

This was my first meatball attempt. Normally Jake makes things like this, but I figured with all the step by step pictures on Ree’s blog, that I could handle it. So I have confidence that you can do it too!

And see how happy these meatballs are? And just think of how happy you will be if you eat these guys for dinner. Maybe you have some rolls in your life that just want to hold meatballs when they grow up. And provolone cheese? Oh yeah, so good.

Meatball Sliders
Recipe from The Pioneer Woman Cooks

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup panko or bread crumbs
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 t salt
  • pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 T olive oil
  • 1/2 medium onion, diced
  • 1 large jar marinara
  • 12 {Round} Hoagie Buns, or dinner rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese, cut into 4 wedges each

Directions:

  1. Mix meat with bread crumbs, garlic, salt, pepper and milk. Knead together with hands, and roll into heaping tablespoon-sized balls.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook for one minute. Add meatballs between the onions and brown for 1 minute, turn them over and brown for 1 more minute. (You might have to do this in two batches, depending on the size of your skillet. I sure had to!)
  3. Once all the meatballs are browned, place them all back in the skillet. Pour in the jar of marinara; shake pan gently to mix. Put on lid (or a plate that seconds as a lid) and allow to simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. When ready to serve, cut each {Round} Hoagie Bun or dinner roll in half. Place a wedge of provolone on the top and bottom of each roll. Spoon a couple of meatballs with sauce onto the bottom bun; top with the top bun and a toothpick. Serve immediately.

Cute sword toothpicks are helpful at keeping this messy sandwich together.

I’ve been wanting to try this recipe for a while now. It looks so good. And I’ll definitely have to make them with the home-made hoagie buns too! 🙂

  2. Oh! Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to check out her sloppy joe recipe soon, for sure.

I totally recommend these little sliders! The meatballs were a breeze to make! I had no idea. 🙂
