These are the ones. These are what to make when you feel like a disaster.
Make them when you have really chippy nail polish left only on your right hand’s nails… from a month ago.
These are what you make when you get peanut butter on your jeans that just came out of the wash. The truth is you can’t spot clean peanut butter off of jeans. It’s a fact.
These are what you make when you didn’t realize you were in a cookie exchange and need to make alot of something delicious and pretty without much time.
These are the quickest and easiest of all, but don’t tell people that when you make them. Tell people you individually chose every candy cane sprinkle and chocolate chip. Tell them not to ask questions and just eat seven … teen.
Quick Toffee Squares
My Mom’s recipe, she knows what’s up
Ingredients:
- 1 cup butter
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 t vanilla
- dash of salt, to taste
topping –
- heaping 2 cups of chocolate chips
- crushed candy cane or nuts for sprinkling
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°. Mix all of the ingredients together using a wooden spoon and some muscle or an electric mixer. When everything is combined fabulously press into the bottom of a jelly-roll-sized baking sheet (the smaller of the baking sheets). Bake for 15 minutes.
- Take out of the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the top. Cover with another baking sheet to trap the heat in and melt the chocolate. Once the chocolate has melted spread evenly and sprinkle with candy cane bits or nuts. Slice and eat!
P.S. These freeze really well.
These toffee squares are the major hotties of the cookie-bar world.

These look awesome, I can’t wait to make them. We’re traveling out of town for the holidays–I think these can make the 20+ hour drive beautifully 🙂

Thanks for this recipe! We *just* moved to a new house, so I only just got to start my holiday baking. I’m so glad I got to sneak this recipe in last night – Merry Christmas!
Awesome, Alikat! Congrats on the new place!
Made these with Amelia just now…she’s spreading the chocolate while I type.
She said “Mom, wanna bake something?”
Me: sure!
Amelia: let’s check out Aunt Megan’s blog…I need to hold the computer so I can search for chocolate recipes. 🙂
This is my most favorite story ever. :)!!
So I made these for a pot luck/baby shower I went to last night. Its a good thing I brought some home because I had a very sad looking fiance as I walked out the door with the whole batch only leaving one square behind for him. He was super stoked when I came home with half! I dunno what the other girls were having for desert but they missed out!
Oh and instead of candy cane I put skor bits on top! So Yummy!
Oh! I’m glad your fiance got to have more of them!
Skor bits on top sounds perfect!
Does it matter what kind of chocolate chips? I used milk chocolate and they just wouldn’t melt enough to spread!!
Shouldn’t matter! Turn your oven on low/warm, about 200F tops and pop the bars back in just until the chips are melty enough to spread. Hope you love them!
